Aurora Borealis on Camano Island

As I write this post, the HF ham bands are completely dead. Even stalwart 20m has no signals! We can blame it on the extreme geomagnetic storm of May 10 and May 11. Look at those numbers. Crazy!

Around 11:00 PM on May 10, my wife and I went outside and couldn’t believe our eyes. Well, our eyes did take a few moments to adjust from our well lit living room, but once we did, we saw this:

The city of Stanwood in the distance.

The camera did a great job of bringing out the vibrant colors. From the naked eye, there were curtains of color raining down from the sky, and the sky had a eerie glow that illuminated the night into something akin to a full moon. I’ve never seen anything like this first hand.

We really lucked out with the weather and lack of any moonlight. A very rare sight to behold in this part of the world!
